Know the Signs of Pet Allergies

Pets who are affected by allergies may suffer their entire lives; typically symptoms worsen as they get older. We can help alleviate some of that suffering by knowing the signs of allergies and finding the right type of product relief for the symptoms.

There are many types of allergies that can affect your pet. Allergies caused by airborne particles are called atopy. Common sources are pollens, molds, and dust mites. Allergies that result from flea-bites are referred to as flea allergy dermatitis. Certain allergies occur from items your pet ingests, and are typically called food allergies. Contact allergies are caused by something your pet comes in direct contact with, such as carpet fibers, plastics, and other things. Contact allergies are far less common than atopy and flea allergy dermatitis in pets.

Dogs:

.An allergy is an abnormal response that a dog’s immune system has towards an allergen. An allergen is an environmental substance that causes an abnormal immune response. When the dog comes in contact with the allergen, his immune system tricks itself into thinking that this allergen is going to cause harm, so it sets up an inflammatory response to try to protect the dog from it. In dogs without allergies, the immune system does not react so strongly to the environmental substance and the dog is not affected. Unfortunately, dogs with hypersensitivities or allergies to the substance initiate a chain of events in their bodies that result in signs of illness.

Because of the high cost and inconvenience of traveling to the veterinarian’s office, many owners are seeking over-the-counter cures to alleviate their dogs’ allergy symptoms. Fortunately, there are a few products available to help your pooch, which are not only effective, but relatively cheap, as well.

Believe it or not, many antihistamines that veterinarians prescribe are formulated for humans. In addition, some of these antihistamines are available over the counter. For instance, the Dog Owner’s Guide website states that antihistamines containing the ingredients diphenhydramine or hydroxyzine are effective in treating a dog’s allergy symptoms. Consult with your veterinarian for dosage information, however, because it is different than it is for humans and depends upon the dog’s weight.

If your dog is experiencing skin issues as a result of its allergies, soothing shampoos may calm the irritation. Mild shampoos can often soothe the dog’s skin, particularly if the inflammation is caused by environmental factors, such as pollen and dust mites. Oatmeal shampoos often work well, in addition to conditioners and moisturizing sprays. Follow the directions on the product’s label for soak times and frequency of use. Avoid any products that contain perfumes, as they may further irritate the skin.

Sometimes allergies can be quite challenging to deal with, whether determining the cause of the allergy or creating a clean and allergen-free environment for your pet. This is why it is so important to partner with your veterinarian in diagnosing and treating your dog's allergies.

CATS:

When a cat has allergies, her immune system is overly sensitive to certain everyday substances and begins to identify them as dangerous. Even though these substances—or allergens—are usually common in most environments and harmless to most animals, a cat with allergies will have an extreme reaction to them. As her body tries to rid itself of these substances, she may show a variety of symptoms.

As the cat's body is trying to rid itself of the allergens, your cat will experience a number of different symptoms that will vary with each cat. The common signs of allergies will generally include the more than one of the following symptoms.

If you think that your cat may have an allergy, you should consult your veterinarian so that he can test your cat for allergies.  Once you have determined the cause of your cat's allergy, treatment will vary depending on what allergen is affecting your cat.

The best way to treat allergies is to remove the offending allergens from the environment.

.

CONCLUSION:  If your pet has allergies, help them feel better by regularly cleaning the food area (food and water bowls) and their sleeping area.  In the case of cats, change the litter box often.  Allow them to rest and be sure they drink plenty of water.  If your pet has fleas, purchase a flea collar and bathe them regularly.  If you are concerned,  have your vet do an allergy test.  Allergies can vary from pet to pet, so it is important that you work with your vet to make sure your pet gets the best possible treatment.  You'll both be happier for it!
